This EPC Update will discuss the prospects for a new leadership momentum in EUrope, focusing on Germany’s potential new role, the Weimar Triangle and the future EU-UK relationship.
Have the first weeks of the new German government signalled a revived willingness in Berlin to assume a stronger (co-)leadership role in EUrope? Do Chancellor Merz’s visits to Paris, Warsaw, Brussels and Kyiv signal a drive to form a new European leadership coalition? Will the formation of a stronger Weimar Triangle also provide new momentum for EU reform? Or will ‘coalitions of the willing’ prefer instead to operate on an intergovernmental basis outside the Union’s framework? Finally, what role will the UK play: How will the EU-UK Summit on 19 May and a potential security pact indicate the advent of a new era in relations between the UK and the EU?
Participation is open to EPC members only, the media and EU officials.
